| John knew the importance of Christian unity, of being ecumenical. When you use the word ecumenical, that just means that you love everyone. All Christians just working together. John said, that if you love God and Jesus Christ and you love others, then give me your hand so that we can worship together and serve God together... |

| For centuries we have looked for the Garden of Eden. The term Garden of Eden in Hebrew means "The Garden of Delight". God created us to live in a Garden of Eden. We are created to walk with God in the cool of the day. We are created to enjoy the earth and everything that the earth has to offer us. Sin entered the world and that Eden that was created for us to live in was destroyed. |

| The biblical narrative of Pentecost is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. As recounted in Acts 2:1-6: "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language." While those on whom the Spirit had descended were speaking in tongues, the disciple Peter stood up with the eleven and proclaimed to the crowd that this event was the fulfillment of the prophecy ("I will pour out my spirit") in Joel 2:28-29. Acts 2:41 reports: "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." |

| In the old cowboy movies on television shown in black and white, there was not much mystery as to which guy was the bad guy and which guy was the good guy. These cowboys always wore a certain kind of hat. The bad guy always wore the black hat and the good guys always wore the white hats. So, when you saw the guy in the white hat, you knew he was going to be the hero. But in this story, it is difficult to tell which man was the good guy and which guy was the bad guy... |

| Names are important. Proverbs 22:1 says that a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches. That does not mean that one name is better than the other, what this is talking about in this text is a good reputation. Having a good name is having a good reputation. When someone speaks of your name, they are talking about a good reputation and a good name. So when you speak the name Jesus, behind that name is all that He is... |

Lord give me the strength so that life's surprises, difficulties and trials and tribulations come my way, like a deer, I can climb the high mountains and negotiate the deep thickets and I will not slip and fall... Like Boaz was to Naomi and Ruth. Prophetically and metaphorically speaking, Jesus is our kinsman redeemer. The question that I have for you today is do you know him? Do you know Jesus as kinsman redeemer? Do you know him as the one who has paid the price so that you don't have to pay the price? |

| Naomi told Ruth exactly how to do it. Ruth listened carefully and carried out her instructions precisely. Boaz would be sleeping on the threshing floor that night to protect his grain from thieves. After he went to sleep, Ruth tiptoed in, uncovered his feet, and laid down. By this act she was requesting Boaz to become her goel. Needless to say, Boaz was somewhat startled when he rolled over in the middle of the night and realized there was a woman lying at his feet. "Who are you?" he asked. She answered, "I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative". Spreading his cloak over her would signify his willingness to become her protector and provider. His response was immediate: "May you be blessed of the Lord, my daughter. You have shown your last kindness to be better than the first by not going after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence"... |

| The story of the passion of Christ, the crucifixion and the resurrection is at the very center of Christianity. It is at the very center of our faith. Everything in the Old Testament and the Gospels look forward to this moment in history. Everything in the Acts and in the Epistles and the church ever since has looked back at this moment as the pivotal moment that salvation was brought into this world. We need to understand a little bit about what Jesus went through and what happened... |

| 2 Timothy is Paul's last Epistle. It was written around 56 AD while Paul was under house arrest in Rome where he was convicted of treason and crimes against the state. Timothy was Paul's greatest pupil. He started traveling with Paul when he was 14 years old. When Paul wrote 2 Timothy, he knew his death was immanent, yet he was not grieving over it. His concern was for Timothy and his ministry. What we read in 2 Timothy are Paul's final words and advice to a young preacher. |

| It is very important that we understand the historical circumstance surrounding the life of the runaway slave, Onesimus. You may recall that Paul wrote the book of Philemon and Colossians and sent them to Colossae at the same time. The book of Colossians was delivered by Tychicus to the Church at Colossae which was in Philemon's home. Onesimus delivered the book of Philemon to Philemon, his wife, Apphia, and to the pastor of the Church, Archippus. Read Colossians 4:7-18. This text offers us additional information about the Church at Colossae and Onesimus is mentioned. Read Philemon 1:1-2. Notice that the book was from Paul and Timothy to Philemon, Apphia and Archippus. The letter is addressed not only to two men but to Philemon's wife, Apphia, as well. Read Philemon 1:3-5. Philemon had the reputation as a man of faith that was full of love for the saints. Tuesday - Read Philemon 1:6, Wednesday - Read Philemon 1:7-11, Thursday - Read Philemon 1:10-17, and Friday - Read Philemon 1:18-25. |

| The book of Titus is one of Paul's three Pastoral Epistles. These are called Pastoral Epistles because they were written to pastors. There are thirteen references to Titus in the New Testament. He, like Timothy, traveled with Paul. Paul chose for traveling companions some Jews, a half Jewish person-Timothy, and a Gentile named Titus. He chose a diverse group to help proclaim the Word of God. No matter where they were, people could relate to one of these three types of people. In 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul comments on sending Titus to Dalmatia as a missionary. We find Titus in Crete between 62 and 64 AD. Crete is the largest Greek island-156 miles long and 36 miles wide. After sending Titus to Dalmatia, Paul visits Titus in Crete. Paul wrote the book of Titus in 65 AD and it was delivered to Titus in Crete. Study for the week: Tuesday Read Titus 1:1-5, Wednesday-Read Titus 1:5-16, Thursday-Read Titus 2:1-15, and Friday-Read Titus 3:1-15. |

Colossae was in the region of Phyrigia. Just as Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia, or Bluefield, West Virginia/Virginia, or Kansas City, Kansas/Missouri, could be called the Twin Cities, Colossae and Laodecia were twin cities. Paul did not start these churches. Actually, he never visited them. We believe that Epaphras founded the church at Colossae. He heard Paul preaching the Gospel while he was in Ephesus and took the Good News of Jesus Christ home to Colossae. Paul's letter to the Church at Colossae was delivered by Tychicus. | Ephesus was an important sea port city in Asia. It had a population of over 250,000 people. It was one of the most important commercial centers in Asia. Ephesians was the last of the Pauline Epistles accepted in the canon of scripture. The earliest manuscripts did not have Ephesians 1:1 and therefore, the city of Ephesus was not mentioned. The 3rd Century Scholars (early church fathers) commented about the book of Ephesians and how there was no church mentioned in the greeting. When Paul wrote the book of Romans, he addressed several people by name, even though he had never visited there. Paul visited the church in Ephesus on several occasions; for him not to mention anyone by name in his greeting was unusual. Either Paul wrote it or it is a compilation of Paul's teaching compiled by Timothy, Tychicus or Titus. Whatever the case, it is the inspired Word of God... |

| We have made a virtue out of fearlessness. And it is often a virtue. But, we often take it as "Is God calling me?" Well, he can't be calling me, because he knows that I am afraid. He knows that I am too afraid to answer his call. He's definitely calling Pastor Jeff, because Jeff is clearly not too afraid to answer his call. He's not calling me. But, I don't think the Bible says that you are not going to be called if you are afraid. We like to focus on the bold actions of prophets and biblical figures. But, if you look into their stories, most of them have a moment where they are clearly afraid... |

The last thing that we hear from God in the book of Malachi in the Old Testament, that God was going to send his fore runner before the Messiah. Four hundred years of silence, that day God broke the silence and sent Gabriel to speak to him. Why Zechariahs, the high priest and his wife Elizabeth? They were both righteous in the sight of God... |
